SB 157

LC0018
Bruce Tutvedt

Generally revise tax reappraisal laws

  1. Missoula County generally supports this bill. It provides a much more accurate tracking of current property values as they relate to tax revenues. We are concerned that in the fiscal note it says that local governments will see the same decrease in current taxable values, however we will be able to be made whole by our ability to maintain our current year tax revenues. This will be the second year of decreased tax revenues in Missoula County and the second year where we will have to maintain our current year tax revenue. It is our belief that the decrease in Centrally Assessed properties contributed the majority of the decrease in the County's tax revenue. We would support any efforts to strengthen the laws by which the major corporations (especially telecoms) are able to use to their advantage to cut their property taxes severely and place an additional burden on the residential taxpayers

  2. Sending the following to Reps. Curdy and Willis in House Taxation:

Missoula County supports Senate Bill 157 - Generally revise tax reappraisal laws, before House taxation Wednesday morning. SB 157 tightens the reappraisal cycle and brings neutrality to the different property classifications. Shortening the reappraisal cycle ensures local government revenues are more closely tied to changes in the local economy and could increase predictability in the budgeting process. Please support SB 157.
    Respectfully,
Vickie Zeier on behalf of the Missoula County Commissioners
